First Festival chooses Outline

First Festival was launched in 2013 at Genoa’s “Stadium”, and immediately became a key event on the Italian club culture scenario, as it was the first real festival in Genoa entirely dedicated to EDM. Among its headliners, the event has hosted artistes of the calibre of Chris Liebing, Sven Väth, Jeff Mills, Nina Kraviz and Josh Wink, while the headliners at the last edition included Loco Dice, with the support of Marco Faraone.

        Once again this year, the organizers confirmed Show Technologies TM of Recco (Genoa) as          the rental company for the supply of the Outline sound rig.

       Sacha Bozzo of Show Technologies TM explains, “The rig, with a stereo format, consisted in           twelve Butterfly systems per side, approximately 14 metres apart and flown at a height of 11           metres from the ground. The grid from which we flew the hardware was very large, so the               load capacity for each intersection was just 100 kilos. By adding just one reinforcement beam         we managed to realize two clusters with an overall weight for each group of enclosures –                 including cables and array frames 

– of less than 500 kilos. In spite of the light weight, we obtained excellent coverage, in terms of both SPL and frequency response, for an audience area 60 metres deep and 30 wide. For the prime file closest to the stage we used 10 Mantas systems (with a configuration of 3+1+1+1+1+3) positioned directly on the ground-installed subwoofers. There were also six Subtech 218 below the main left and main right hangs, plus eight DBS 18-2 subwoofers evenly distributed between them; the VIP area on the other hand was covered by two clusters, each of which consisted in three Mantas modules.”

  The technicians had no particular difficulties with the system’s set-up and fine tuning: “Considering the venue’s dimensions and the type of music being amplified, I think the location has good acoustics. Reverberation times are quite uniform – between 1 and 2 seconds. Since it is a sports venue, there are 4 stands, one on each side of the field. For the First Festival, the stage was positioned opposite the East stand. If the system is not aimed extremely carefully, the result is a second system, obstinately pointing in the opposite direction. Fortunately the Outline Butterfly is really directive and, foregoing a little high frequency on the last 3 or 4 metres of the audience area, the sound on the stage was natural and free from reflections”, continued Bozzo.

                  Following numerous e-mails with the headliner’s management, every technical aspect was considered in                          detail by the producer, the promoter (RST Events) and Show Technologies TM.

                  “We found them helpful experienced interlocutors and produced the material that was requested, including                       detailed equipment list and an acoustic simulation. We were not asked to make any changes, neither when                     we presented the project, nor at the sound-check and, if I remember correctly, not even during the show. I                         think everybody was at least as satisfied as us”, added Bozzo.

He concludes: “We used Outline Open Array 3D for the acoustic simulation. We consider it an easy tool to use, intuitive, rapid and above all realistic. Perhaps I shouldn’t say this here, but I’ve also used it with products by other manufacturers. It was for a simulation for the low frequencies and, even if SPL and frequency response were obviously not reliable, it was nevertheless very useful for the configuration of the subwoofers.”

  Giancarlo ‘Jerry’ Paladini, the event’s PA man, states: “This is the sixth consecutive First Festival I’ve worked on as         PA man. Once again this year, using Open Array 3D software, we were able to simulate with remarkable precision,         which enabled us to arrive at the venue and install the rig without taking any measurements. The sound was very           clean, whereas the sound pressure level – I’d swear to this – was almost 130 dB SPL. The set-up worked without           any kind of stress and with an ample dynamic headroom. This doesn’t happen frequently…the ideal situation.”

First Festival nasce nel 2013 all’interno dello ‘Stadium’ di Genova, e fin da subito diventa protagonista della club culture nazionale, essendo il primo vero festival a Genova interamente dedicato alla musica elettronica. La kermesse ha ospitato tra i suoi headliner artisti del calibro di Chris Liebing, Sven Väth, Jeff Mills, Nina Kraviz e Josh Wink, mentre fra gli headliner presenti in quest’ultima edizione c’era Loco Dice con il supporto di Marco Faraone.

       Anche quest’anno gli organizzatori hanno confermato il ‘rental service’ Show Technologies TM di Recco (Genova)           per la fornitura dell’impianto Outline.

        Spiega Sacha Bozzo di Show Technologies TM: “L’impianto, in configurazione stereo, era composto da 12 sistemi           Butterfly per lato a circa 14 metri di distanza l’uno dall’altro sospesi ad 11 metri da terra. Il graticcio su cui                         realizziamo gli appendimenti presenta una superficie molto ampia, di conseguenza il carico disponibile per ciascun         ‘nodo’ risulta limitato a soli 100 Kg. Con la minima aggiunta di una putrella di rinforzo siamo riusciti a realizzare due         cluster dal peso complessivo per 

ogni gruppo di diffusori, inclusi cavi ed array frame inferiore ai 500 Kg. Nonostante la leggerezza riusciamo a coprire egregiamente, sia in termini di SPL che di risposta in frequenza, un parterre profondo 60 metri e largo 30. Per le prime file ci aiutano 10 sistemi Mantas configurati 3+1+1+1+1+3 appoggiati direttamente sui subwoofers a terra. In più ci sono 6 Subtech 218 in corrispondenza di main left e main right più 8 subwoofers DBS 18-2 uniformemente distribuiti tra i due; la Vip Area è servita invece da 2 cluster, montati in appoggio, da 3 moduli Mantas ciascuno”.

                           Nella messa a punto del sistema i tecnici non hanno avuto particolari difficoltà: “Credo che la location, considerando volumetrie e tipo di programma musicale, abbia una buona acustica. I tempi di riverberazione sono piuttosto uniformi e compresi tra 1 e 2 secondi. Trattandosi inoltre di un impianto sportivo sono presenti 4 tribune, 2 disposte sui lati lunghi, le altre 2 sui lati corti del parterre. Nel caso del First Festival il palco è posizionato frontalmente rispetto alla tribuna EST. Se non si punta con estrema cautela il sistema, ci si ritrova con un secondo impianto, parafrasando De Andrè, puntato in direzione ostinata e contraria. Fortunatamente il Butterfly di Outline è realmente direttivo e rinunciando ad un po’ di alte frequenze per gli ultimi 3 o 4 metri di parterre, l’ascolto sul palco risulta naturale e privo di riflessioni”, continua Bozzo.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               

         A seguito di un fitto scambio di e-mail con il management dell’headliner​ ogni aspetto tecnico è stato                                  accuratamente valutato dal produttore, dal promoter RST Events e da Show Technologies TM.

“       Abbiamo trovato interlocutori disponibili e preparati ed abbiamo prodotto il materiale che ci è stato richiesto, tra cui         una lista dettagliata delle attrezzature ed una simulazione acustica. Non ci è stato richiesto di apportare alcuna               modifica né all’atto della presentazione del progetto, né al sound-check e se non ricordo male neanche durante lo            show. Credo che tutti fossero soddisfatti almeno quanto noi”, aggiunge Bozzo.

E conclude: “Per la modellazione acustica abbiamo utilizzato Outline Openarray3D. Lo troviamo uno strumento facile da usare, intuitivo, veloce e soprattutto realistico. Non dovrei forse dirlo qui ma è capitato di usarlo anche con prodotti non del marchio. Si trattava di una simulazione per le basse e nonostante SPL e risposte in frequenza fossero ovviamente non attendibili, è stato comunque molto utile nella configurazione dei subwoofers”.

           Giancarlo ‘Jerry’ Paladini, PA man dell’evento, ha dichiarato: “Questo è il sesto First Festival consecutivo che mi              vede impegnato in qualità di responsabile del PA. Anche quest’anno per mezzo di Openarray3D siamo stati in                  grado simulare con notevole precisione, cosa che ci ha consentito di arrivare in loco ed installare il sistema senza            bisogno di effettuare misurazioni. Il suono era molto pulito mentre il livello di pressione acustica – mi ritengo una              persona onesta – era prossimo ai 130 dB SPL. L’impianto lavorava senza nessun tipo di stress e con un’ampia                riserva dinamica. Non mi capita di frequente…situazione ideale”.
